Extra Opportunities

Pep Bands

Every year we enjoy having pep band at multiple events. This can be for athletic events like football games, basketball games, and lacrosse games. Perhaps some of our favorite events, however, are races. We have a pep band annually for the Skinny Turkey Race on Thanksgiving morning. We have also had a group at the Rock'n'Roll Marathon and the City of Oaks Marathon. We are always looking for new opportunities, but they have to be planned far in advance to work with the rest of the busy schedule.

Pep band is a great way to enjoy lots of great music combined with a casual setting. It also serves as a great recruitment tool as we get to perform for a different part of our community. For certain events, we also allow middle school students or students that are not part of the band program to join us.

Pit Orchestra

Each year the theatre program has their musical production. We have always taken pride in this show and it is a great opportunity to showcase multiple facets of our performing and visual arts at Wakefield. Most years the musical takes place in November and has a pit orchestra with winds, percussion, keyboards, and strings. Due to the marching band schedule, rehearsals often begin in early November and are pretty busy for the 2-3 week production phase.

Past shows include 9 to 5, Cinderella, Grease, The Sound of Music, Tarzan, Oliver, My Fair Lady, and Peter Pan to name a few.

Honors Bands

Outside of school, students are encourage to take private lessons and get involved with other ensembles. In Wake County, there are multiple opportunities. Some of these include:

- The  Philharmonic Association
- All District Bands
- College Honors Bands (like UNCG, UNCW, etc.)
- Military & All National Honor Bands

To learn more, you can ask the music director. Most of these groups require an audition with a prepared solo, scales, and potentially sight reading.
