Our first year as a Band Program found many successes. We performed three concerts as well as a performance for the dedication of our school. We also made our first trip to concert band festival. Our performance in the 2001 CDBA High School Concert Band Festival took place on March 9th at Asheboro High School. We programmed a Level III/IV performance. The music selected was Blue Ridge Overture by Frank Erickson and Rondo for Winds and Percussion by John Edmondson. Our march was Bonds of Unity by Karl King. In our preparation, Dr. Larry Marks, Director of Bands at UNC-Charlotte, Mr. Jeffrey Fuchs, Coordinator of Band Activities at UNC-Chapel Hill, and Mrs. Marsha Smithwick, retired band director, each came and worked with our band. At festival, our scores were I, I, and II on stage. These, combined with our I in sight-reading, gave us an overall rating of SUPERIOR. What an outstanding way to begin.
