In 2003-2004, the Wakefield Bands reached another milestone in its brief history. The Concert Band performed music entirely selected from Level IV for the first time. Their selections were “When the Stars Began to Fall” by Fred J Allen and “The Last to Defend” by David Shaffer. Their march was “Coast Guards” by Karl King. The Wind Ensemble performed music selected from Level VI for the second year. Their selections were “Caccia and Chorale” by Clifton Williams and “Fantasia in G” by Timothy Mahr. Their march was “Emblem of Unity” by JJ Richards. In preparation for festival, the Wind Ensemble performed at NC State University and in a joint concert with the Triangle Wind Ensemble. Although a series of bad weather forced the cancellation of most guest conductors and the pre-festival concert, both ensembles were able to rehearse with Dr. Larry Marks from UNC-Charlotte and Dr. Michael Votta from UNC-Chapel Hill visited Wakefield for the first time to work with the Wind Ensemble. At this year's festival, held at WHS, both bands received perfect SUPERIOR ratings from all four judges. Wakefield was one of only four band programs to have multiple ensembles achieve this level of performance.
