The 2003 Wakefield High School Marching Band's Production will use the
visual concept of puzzles to illustrate three different aspects of music.
The first puzzle piece is MELODY. The second puzzle piece is HARMONY and the
third puzzle piece is RHYTHM. At the end of the production we will combine
all three puzzle pieces to illustrate how a complete piece of music has all
the elements interacting together. We will use parts of Benjamin Britten's
"A Young Person's Guide to the Symphony" as our musical basis for most of
the show. For MELODY we will use Britten's setting of the theme by Henry
Purcell as well as his variation for violin, percussion and low brass. For
RHYTHM, we will use the variation for trumpets as well as parts of the
fugue. Finally, to illustrate all of the parts working together we will
finish our production with the same material that Britten used to finish his
work. In addition to Britten's music, we will use "Nimrod" from Sir Edward
Elgar's "Enigma Variations" in order to illustrate HARMONY.
